We do not have organic certification because it is cost-prohibitive for small farms to apply for, and because certain practices like using synthetic fertilizers and ‘organic’ pesticides all can still be used on ‘Certified Organic’ farms.
We are aiming for Certified Naturally Grown certification in 2027, which is a nationally recognized, grass roots, peer-review certification that came about due to some of the issues with ‘Certified Organic’ mentioned above.
You get what you pay for. Without the economies of scale, cheaper synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and the use of cheap or imported labor commonly used on large commercial farms, it simply costs a little bit more to grow vegetables and livestock locally on a small-scale in a regenerative fashion. We do our best to offer competitive pricing for rural families, while also covering our costs and allowing ourselves a fair compensation for our effort.
We utilize physical, mechanical, and biological weed and pest control methods in place of herbicides and pesticides. This looks like using landscape fabric, hoes, and cover crops for weed control, or insect netting, diatomaceous earth, and compost teas for insect and disease management.
At this time, organic chicken feed is too cost prohibitive for our farm in order for us to offer our customers eggs or meat at affordable prices. Our homemade feed is a varying combination of black oil sunflower seed, corn, wheat, peas, barley, cacium and Fertrell vitamin mix, plus lots of kitchen and garden scraps, and whatever insects, worms, and greens they can glean from the pasture during the spring and summer. We source 100% of our whole grain feedstocks from nearby farms in the Red River Valley, and prioritize buying from farmers who we know are using regenerative farming practices.
